Announcing: MTG Brewing Challenge

Brewing decks is a large part of Magic: The Gathering. While one certainly does not need to be a good brewer to succeed in competitive MTG, talented brewers can have the earliest access to good, even broken decks and so are best positioned to maximize their use before the rest of the player base catch on (or the banhammer falls). There are several misconceptions about brewing that I encounter. One is that “brewing is easy; many decks build themselves.” While it may be true that someone can just slap together all the elementals of a set and call it an elemental deck, it is unlikely that this list will actually end up as the best, or even as a working elemental deck in the meta. The actual deck that makes it may be dozens of cards away from the most obvious build. Brewing takes effort and time, and a lot of testing. That said, there are I believe, people who are naturally gifted brewers; people who look at a new set and are able to put together a winner even with little or no testing....

Lessons from the Ladder: On Rank Decay

At present, the rewards for climbing the Arena ladder to mythic are not very significant. However, the prize for staying within the top 1000 of mythic-ranked players is: a shot at one of 16 spots to play at a Mythic Championship (formerly known as the Pro Tour). Perhaps correspondingly so, reaching mythic rank is also not as difficult as trying to remain in the top 1000. It is very doable to climb to mythic playing just until one finishes the daily quests a day, and it gets easier after you’ve hit mythic the first time since then you start on platinum 4. However, staying in the top 1000 is quite a challenge. For one, the level of competition on the mythic rank ladder is higher than that in any other event on Arena. A player who consistently does 4 wins on average in constructed events, for example, cannot expect to stay in the top 1000 at the same level of performance. Operating in a BO1 Meta

Whenever we playtest for an upcoming tournament, we always remember to do both mainboard and sideboarded games. Typically, we want to test more games with sideboards than mainboards. This is because in BO3 (best-of-3) matches, you play exactly one game with mainboards and at most two games with sideboards. Thus, if your win rate versus a deck improves considerably post-board, then you should not consider that deck a bad matchup for purposes of deck selection. Making sure that you are not on the wrong side of the meta is critical to deck selection. With Magic: Arena, WotC has introduced a new dimension of competitive magic: BO1 (best-of-1) games. Arena’s rank ladder currently applies only to BO1 matches in both limited and constructed. In this article, I focus on the latter and examine how BO1 changes the dynamics of deck construction and selection.
