Limited Report: MTGA Core Set 2021

This entry is a summary of my experience collecting cards for Core Set 2021 through limited. As in previous sets, my main objective is to collect cards as efficiently as possible in order to eventually complete the rares of the set.

Strategy

For Core Set 2021, I did 1 sealed, 6 premier drafts, and 5 traditional drafts. I did the sealed and the 5 premier drafts first. I wanted to do premier drafts until I got to gold rank. The rationale behind this is that I wanted to get the extra pack from reaching gold but traditional draft offers better expected value.

Outcome

The following table shows the outcome of each event I joined. I had one sealed token which I bought at 1800 gems when it was the daily deal and a draft token I also bought at 1350 gems from the daily deal.

The net cost was 3850 gems. This is equivalent to 19.25 packs. Since I had won 42 packs total, this means that the total value generated from the limited run was 22.5 packs and 71 rare pulls. This is worse than the IKO run, where I was able to generate net value of 43 packs and 78 rares (14 drafts with a net cost of 1000 gems). However, this is partly due to the first draft in IKO being free. If it was not, then the total cost would have been 2500 gems which is much closer to the cost for Core Set 2021. Nonetheless, this cost is still much better than in previous sets, where I only did Quick Drafts.

In the premier draft I won 4.5 games on average which translates to a win rate of 64.27%. My traditional draft win rate was 60%. Correspondingly, the value generated in traditional draft with packs priced at 200 gems each and rares not included is 850 gems while for premier draft this is 3300 gems. I might want to try doing just premier drafts for Zendikar Rising.
